Rob Houdijk

Geboren te Tilburg

Rob Houdijk was born in Tilburg in 1950. He grew up in 's Hertogenbosch where he attended grammar-school. After his grammer-school period he studied Classical Languages and Literature at the university of Nijmegen. His passion for drawing and painting dates back to his childhood. Durig his entire period as a student painting had continued to play an important role in his life. in 1975, shortly before receiving his degree, he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, where he studied painting. In 1978 he was granted a position as a teacher of Classical Languages at the Murmellius gymnasium in Alkmaar, a position which, being married and father of two daughters, he was to keep until 1998, though mostly part-time. As a result of an ever decreasing number of hours as a teacher, more time could be reserved for modelling in clay and wax, a discipline which, after his time at the academy, had remained in the background.

Rob Houdijk paints and draws with oil- and watercolours, pastels, charcoal and pen and ink. His subjects are people in their environment, people and animals interacting, landscapes, townscapes and still lifes. People and animals also present the central themes for his bronzes. In both painting and modelling his style could be called impressionistic. Though figuration is always the starting-point, a tendency towards slight abstraction is noticeable throughout his whole work.

In the Netherlands and abroad Rob Houdijk has many commissions in his name. For instance, for the Holland America Line he made, among others, a large series of pastels showing Dutch harbour-views, and various groups of bronzes were made by him for the Bouwfonds Nederlandse Gemeenten.

In 2007 he moved from his own gallery 'Inter Pascua' at Oterleek to 'Atelier Rob Houdijk' (a studio and a gallery to exhibit his work) at St. Pancras, near Alkmaar.
